It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:
“The Jews split into seventy-one sects and my nation will split into seventy-three sects.”
[Sunan Ibn Majah 3991]
Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Amr:
that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:
"...Indeed the children of Isra'il split into seventy-two sects, and my Ummah will split into seventy-three sects. All of them are in the Fire Except one sect." He said: "And which is it O Messenger of Allah?" He said: "What I am upon and my Companions."

[Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2641]
Muslims today have regrettably divided and subdivided themselves into numerous sects each one labeling themselves by diverse names such as sunni, shia, hanafi, hanbali, maliki, shafi, Bbarelvi, wahabi, and many others.
The Quran strongly forbids divisions of any sort or to associate with those that break away into sects.
Allah SWT said in the Quran : Surely those who divide the religion into sects and identify themselves as a sect, O Muhammad, you have nothing to do with them. Their case will be called to account by Allah Himself,... (Quran 6 : 159)
Prophet (PBUH) tells us that muslims will be divided into 73 sects; out of which only one sect will enter paradise and 72 sects will enter hell fire.
We confused... How do I know which sect is on the right path?
Let us see which group is on the correct track in light of the Quran and Hadith.
Whenever there is any dispute in any matter, refer to the Qur'an and the Hadith
to resolve it.
Allah SWT said in the Quran :
O you who believe, obey Allah and obey the Messenger and those in authority among you. Then, if you quarrel about something, revert it back to Allah and the Messenger, if you believe in Allah and the Last Day. That is good, and the best at the end. (Qur’an 4:59)
That is, "Take the Qur'an and the Sunnah as the final authority in your disputes."
I will show you the straight path with only one hadith. If you follow it, you will never go astray. In shaa Allah. And this is the hadith.
Yahya related to me from Malik that he heard that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "I have left two matters with you. As long as you hold to them, you will not go the wrong way. They are the Book of Allah and the Sunna of His Prophet."
[Book 46, Hadith 3]
For true believers, this single Hadith is enough to avoid going astray,
so don’t follow any sect just uphold the Quran and the way of the Prophet [PBUH]. In shaa Allah, we will be among the one sect who is saved.
In another hadith.
This hadith has been transmitted on the authority of Abu Hayyan but with this addition:
" The Book of Allah contains right guidance, the light, and whoever adheres to it and holds it fast, he is upon right guidance and whosoever deviates from it goes astray.
[Sahih Muslim 2408c]
Narrated Tariq:
`Abdullah said, "The best talk is Allah's Book (Qur'an), and the best guidance is the guidance of Muhammad."
[Sahih al-Bukhari 6098]
Don't split into sects, please follow only Quran and Sunnah to save your Imaan,
only way to paradise.
“Say: ‘O you mankind! Now truth (i.e. the Quran and the Prophet Muhammad), has come to you from your Lord. So whosoever receives guidance, he does so for the good of his own self; and whosoever goes astray, he does so to his own loss;...’” (Quran : 10 - 108)
The most miserable loser is a man who knows the path to Allah yet he turns away from it. O Allah, direct me to the right path.
I do not belong to any sect; I am simply a Muslim. Allah SWT has given us the title of Muslim, thus instead of calling yourself Sunni, Shafi, Hanbali, and so on, simply call yourself a Muslim.
…Allah named you Muslims… (Quran 22:78)
...says, "I am a Muslim". (Quran 41:33)
So call yourself muslim only without labelling any sect.
Narrated Anas bin Malik:
The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Facilitate things to people (concerning religious matters), and do not make it hard for them and give them good tidings and do not make them run away (from Islam).
[Sahih al-Bukhari 69]
In another narration:
Narrated Abu Huraira:
The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Religion is very easy and whoever overburdens himself in his religion will not be able to continue in that way. So you should not be extremists, but try to be near to perfection and receive the good tidings that you will be rewarded; and gain strength by worshipping in the mornings, the afternoons, and during the last hours of the nights." (See Fath-ul-Bari, Page 102, Vol 1).
[Sahih al-Bukhari 39]
It was narrated that Abu Hurairah said:
"The Messenger of Allah said: 'Indeed, this religion is easy, and no one will ever overburden himself in religion, except that it will overcome him. So seek what is appropriate, and come as close as you can, and receive the glad tidings (that you will be rewarded), and take it easy; and gain strength by worshipping in the mornings, afternoons, and during the last hours of the nights.'"
[Sunan an-Nasa'i 5034]
...He has chosen you and laid on you no burden in the matter of your religion… [Quran 22:78]
Abu Dhar (r.a) said, "I was with the Prophet (pbuh) one day and I heard him saying: "There is something I fear for my Ummah than the Dajjal." It was then that I became afraid, so I said: "Oh Rasool Allah! Which thing is that?" He (SAW) said; "Misguided and astray scholars." Refrence: [Musnad Ahmad (5/145) No. 21334 and 21335]
