Allahu Akbar

What is Shirk?

Shirk means, putting someone or something equal to Allah. It is one of the gravest sins that Allah will never forgive. By committing major shirk, a person takes out of the folds of Islam. Allah knows the best.

Shirk is worse than death, because death separates you from this world whereas shirk separates you from Allah. O Allah please protect us from all types of shirk, big and small.

It was narrated from Abu Darda’ that my close friend (ﷺ) advised me: “Do not associate anything with Allah, even if you are cut and burned...” [Sunan Ibn Majah 4034]

If the time comes to sacrifice your life for faith, then definitely give your life, but never give up faith. Indeed, a true Muslim sacrifices his life but never gives up his faith. It is possible that life can go out from our bodies, but it is impossible that faith can go out from our hearts. Life is not important but faith is important.

Ya Allah, make us to die as true Muslim. Ameen Ya Rabbul Alameen.

Form of Shirk

Shirk can take many forms; it is not simply worshipping an idol as many think. Some of the different types of Shirk are as follows.

Vowing

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet (ﷺ) said (that Allah said), "Vowing does not bring to the son of Adam anything I have not already written in his fate, but vowing is imposed on him by way of fore ordainment. Through vowing I make a miser spend of his wealth." [Sahih al-Bukhari 6609]

Narrated Ibn `Umar: The Prophet (ﷺ) forbade vowing and said, "In fact, vowing does not prevent anything, but it makes a miser to spend his property." [Sahih al-Bukhari 6608]

Allahu Akbar Shirk may sometimes take the form of words:

Supplications

It was narrated from Nu'man bin Bashir that : the Messenger of Allah (saas) said: "Indeed the supplication is the worship." Then he recited: "And your Lord said: Invoke Me, I will respond to you." [Sunan Ibn Majah 3828]

To make supplication to other than Allah, e.g. grave or idol is Shirk.

O mankind! A similitude has been coined, so listen to it (carefully): Verily! those on whom you call besides Allâh, cannot create (even) a fly, even though they combine together for the purpose. And if the fly snatches away a thing from them, they will have no power to release it from the fly. So weak are (both) the seeker and the sought. (Quran 22 : 73)

"And invoke not besides Allâh, any that will neither profit you, nor hurt you, but if (in case) you did so, you shall certainly be one of the Zâlimûn (polytheists and wrong-doers)." And if Allâh touches you with hurt, there is none who can remove it but He; and if He intends any good for you, there is none who can repel His Favour which He causes it to reach whomsoever of His slaves He wills. And He is the Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. Say: "O you mankind! Now truth (i.e. The Qur'ân and Prophet Muhammad SAW), has come to you from your Lord. So whosoever receives guidance, he does so for the good of his own self, and whosoever goes astray, he does so to his own loss, ..." (Quran 10 : 106 - 107 - 108)

Invoking anything other than Allah is shirk.

Narrated `Abdullah: The Prophet (ﷺ) said one statement and I said another. The Prophet (ﷺ) said "Whoever dies while still invoking anything other than Allah as a rival to Allah, will enter Hell (Fire)." And I said, "Whoever dies without invoking anything as a rival to Allah, will enter Paradise." [Sahih al-Bukhari 4497]

Surely Allah will never forgive the one who commits the sin of shirk... (Quran 4 : 116)

Whoever wants to swear should swear by Allah

Narrated Ibn `Umar: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Do not swear by your fathers; and whoever wants to swear should swear by Allah." [Sahih al-Bukhari 7401]

Narrated AbuHurayrah: The Prophet (ﷺ) said: Do not swear by your fathers, or by your mothers, or by rivals to Allah; and swear by Allah only, and swear by Allah only when you are speaking the truth. [Sunan Abi Dawud 3248]

Narrated Sa'd bin 'Ubaidah: That Ibn 'Umar heard a man saying: "No by the Ka'bah" so Ibn 'Umar said: "Nothing is sworn by other than Allah, for I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: 'Whoever swears by other than Allah, he has committed disbelief or shirk.'" [Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1535]

Swearing by something other than Allah SWT is Shirk.

Saying 'Namaste' is Shirk

Saying 'Namaste' is Shirk! "Nama" means bow, "as" means I, and "te" means you. Therefore, Namaste means "bow me you" or "I bow to you." And we Muslims do not bow down to anyone except Allah. Many Muslims, say 'Namaste', we need to educate them that this is Shirk and Allah SWT says, 'He will never forgive who do shirk.'

How to Greet Non-Muslims?

Just say: Hi, hello, good morning, good afternoon, good evening, good night etc, but never say Namaste.

Wishing Merry Christmas is Kufr.

What people don’t realise is that when you are wishing Merry Christmas, you are agreeing that Jesus Christ was born on the 25th of December. And you are agreeing that he is the begotten son of God.... Na’uzubillah which is kufr/shirk. Shirk is a greatest sin which Allah will never forgive.

Those who say, "God is the Messiah, son of Mary," have defied God. The Messiah himself said, "Children of Israel, worship God. He is my Lord as well as your Lord." If anyone associated others with God, He will not permit them to enter Heaven. Their destiny will be Hell. No one can help such unjust people. [Quran 5 : 72]

Be careful what you say, kufrana alfaz kehne se bacho kahin kufrana alfaz tumhe kafir na banade.

Aksar log apne hindu friends ko namaste kehte hain aur christian friends ko unke tewhar (Christmas) ke waqt merry christmas kehte hain. So my brothers and sisters in islam, Don’t say namaste or merry Christmas to friends or anyone. Because ye kufrana alfaz hain aur ye alfaaz hamare iman ko khatre mein dal dete hain.

Those who do kufr to keep their friendships must understand that they are risking their religion to please their friend. If you do this, you will definitely land up in hell.

Aise hi, aksar log Takaleef o Musibat ke waqt kufrana alfaz keh bait’te hain. Aur chand log apne iman ki kamzori ki wajah se baiteh baiteh aise hi kufrana alfaz kehdete hain. Jab ke inko pata hi nahi rehta ke inhone kya kehdiya aur iska natija kitna khatarnak [Jahannum] hai.

Imitation

Narrated Abdullah ibn Umar: The Prophet (ﷺ) said: He who copies any people is one of them. [Sunan Abi Dawud 4031]

Allahu Akbar

Allahu Akbar Shirk may sometimes take the form of actions:

All acts of worship is only for Allah SWT alone.

Allah created humanity for one purpose; to worship Him alone, and that He has placed everything in the Earth as an aid for mankind to achieve this goal. Worship to Allah should be the number one focus in everyone's life and everything else besides that is secondary.

All acts of worship are due to Allah alone; from prayer, fasting, zakat, hajj, supplication, sacrificing, fear, hope, repentance, seeking help, trust, vowing, dependency, obedience and other than that from the various acts of worship only for Allah SWT alone.

Your Lord has commanded that you should worship none but Him,... (Quran 17 : 23)

So, know ˹well, O Prophet,˺ that there is no god ˹worthy of worship˺ except Allah... (Quran 47:19)

Indeed, sincere devotion is due ˹only˺ to Allah... [Quran 39:3]

So offer Prayer and sacrifice to your Lord alone. [Quran 108:2]

Say. Surely my prayer and my sacrifice and my life and my death are (all) for Allah, the Lord of the worlds; (Quran 6:162)

Engaging in prayer, prostration, supplication, fear, hope, vowing to anyone other than Allah is shirk. And slaughter an animal in the name of idol, a saint etc, is considered as shirk.

Witchcraft

Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "Avoid the Mubiqat, i.e., shirk and witchcraft." [Sahih al-Bukhari 5764]

Show off in prayer is shirk.

It was narrated that Abu Sa’eed said: “The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) came out to us when we were discussing Dajjal (False Christ) and said: ‘Shall I not tell you of that which I fear more for you than Dajjal?’ We said: ‘Yes.’ He said: ‘Hidden polytheism, when a man stands to pray and makes it look good because he sees a man looking at him.’” [Sunan Ibn Majah 4204]

Jundub (May Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "He who so acts to show off, Allah will disgrace him on the Day of Resurrection, and he who does good deeds so that people (may hold him in high esteem), Allah will expose his hidden evil intentions before the people on the Day of Resurrection." [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]. [Riyad as-Salihin 1619]

In another narration.

Narrated Tarif Abi Tamima: I saw Safwan and Jundab and Safwan's companions when Jundab was advising. They said, "Did you hear something from Allah's Messenger (ﷺ)?" Jundab said, "I heard him saying, 'Whoever does a good deed in order to show off, Allah will expose his intentions on the Day of Resurrection (before the people)... [Sahih al-Bukhari 7152]

On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: The first of people against whom judgment will be pronounced on the Day of Resurrection will be a man who died a martyr. He will be brought and Allah will make known to him His favours and he will recognize them. [The Almighty] will say: And what did you do about them? He will say: I fought for you until I died a martyr. He will say: You have lied - you did but fight that it might be said [of you]: He is courageous. And so it was said. Then he will be ordered to be dragged along on his face until he is cast into Hell-fire. [Another] will be a man who has studied [religious] knowledge and has taught it and who used to recite the Quran. He will be brought and Allah will make known to him His favours and he will recognize them. [The Almighty] will say: And what did you do about them? He will say: I studied [religious] knowledge and I taught it and I recited the Quran for Your sake. He will say: You have lied - you did but study [religious] knowledge that it might be said [of you]: He is learned. And you recited the Quran that it might be said [of you]: He is a reciter. And so it was said. Then he will be ordered to be dragged along on his face until he is cast into Hell-fire. [Another] will be a man whom Allah had made rich and to whom He had given all kinds of wealth. He will be brought and Allah will make known to him His favours and he will recognize them. [The Almighty] will say: And what did you do about them? He will say: I left no path [untrodden] in which You like money to be spent without spending in it for Your sake. He will say: You have lied - you did but do so that it might be said [of you]: He is open-handed. And so it was said. Then he will be ordered to be dragged along on his face until he is cast into Hell-fire. It was related by Muslim (also by at-Tirmidhi and an-Nasa'i). [Hadith 6, 40 Hadith Qudsi]

Abu Hurairah narrated that the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) said: "Seek refuge in Allah from the Pit of Sorrows." They said: "O Messenger of Allah! What is the Pit of Sorrows?" He said: "gorge in Hell from which Hell seeks Allah's refuge a Hundred times every day." It was said: "O Messenger of Allah! Who shall enter it?" He said: "The reciters who were showing off with their deeds." Grade: Da'if (Darussalam) [Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2383]

Keep your intentions pure because no matter what you do, Allah already knows what is in your heart, you can fool people but not Allah. Ya Allah, cleanse my heart from show off.

Surely Shirk Leads To Hell

Shirk is a greatest sin which Allah will never forgive. Surely Shirk leads to Hell.

Surely Allah will never forgive the one who commits the sin of shirk... (Quran 4 : 116)

Surely, Allah does not forgive that a partner is ascribed to Him, and He forgives other than that to whom He wills. Whoever associates anyone with Allah, indeed has devised a tremendous sin. (Quran 4:48)

...If anyone associated others with God, He will not permit them to enter Heaven. Their destiny will be Hell. No one can help such unjust people. [Quran 5 : 72]

Narrated `Abdullah: Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "Anyone who dies worshipping others along with Allah will definitely enter the Fire." I said, "Anyone who dies worshipping none along with Allah will definitely enter Paradise." [Sahih al-Bukhari 1238]

It is narrated on the authority of Jabir that a man came to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and said: Messenger of Allah, what are the two things quite unavoidable? He replied: He who dies without associating anyone with Allah would (necessarily) enter Paradise and he who dies associating anything with Allah would enter the (Fire of) Hell. [Sahih Muslim 93a]

It is narrated on the authority of Jabir b. Abdullah: I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) saying: He who met Allah without associating anything with Allah entered Paradise and he who met Him associating (anything) with Him entered Fire. [Sahih Muslim 93b]

If you avoid major sins that are forbidden, then We shall delete your minor sins, and grant you an honourable entry into Paradise. [Quran 4:31]

...We shall not join (in worship) any (gods) with our Lord. `And exalted is the Majesty of our Lord:... (Quran 72 : 2 - 3)

...If I disobey my Lord, I fear the punishment of an awful Day. (Quran 10:15)

Shirk has destroyed our success. O Allah please protect us from all types of shirk, big and small.
